Will & Alfie - Preliminary Task

Here is a YouTube link to our preliminary task

Shot reverse shot we used two actors and and made sure we got each characters dialogue and some reaction shots, so we ended up with a conversation with dialogue and reactions. We ensured to use the 180 degree rule to make sure it made sense to the viewer, otherwise there would be a lack of verisimilitude within the film. The 180 degree rule made it so the characters were made to seem to be looking at each other, if the rule was broken it would seem that the actors would be looking in the same direction, therefore causing confusion. We used match on editing to maintain the flow of editing as well as directing attention to actions done by the actors. For example, match on editing was used when the door was opened and the camera focused on the handle, another example would be when one of the characters pulls a gun from his belt and places it on the table. We have done this by a close up of the gun being removed from his belt, then a medium shot was used to capture the same motion but from a different perspective.

We liked doing the shot where the actor is picking the lock towards the camera. This was an effective shot because it had the reactions and emotions of the actor shown in a close up and it set the genre because of the tension that it builds. We have learnt that we would use these shots more often in order to manipulate how the audience feels and to get them to understand how the actor would feel in this situation - the close up does this well, as it shows all the aspects of the actors face and emotions. We would also like to use this shot more as it is much more of an interesting shot, and it will engage the audience much more than a basic shot of someone picking the lock with the camera viewing the back of their head. However we disliked at some points the camera was shaking, this happened because we had a lack of space, therefore it involved the cameraman balancing in the corner of the room to try and get as much content in one shot. This taught us to ensure to have more than enough room to have a better quality of shot, especially for the tense moments i.e the dialogue in the shot reverse shot.

Introduction

We are will and Alfie and we are doing our preliminary task of creating a short film where someone comes through a door and has a conversation with someone else. The clip must include 180-degree rule, dialogue, match on action and shot reverse shot.

We have chosen to do a crime and action genre for our preliminary task because we are both interested in this genre and have made an attempt to re-create a set piece of the genre. We have gained inspiration from films such as Hitman and the John Wick series, these are more tension based films. They tend to keep the audience engaged and therefore leads to an interesting story and successful film.

We hope to gain some knowledge and experience on techniques of cinematography used to create a certain genre of film. Through using certain camera shots we have learned that the way the shot is organised can have an effect on how the scene looks. For example, low angle and high angle shots can give a big indication on someone's power that they hold.
